Ben Stable Spot: Weaver Gas
Feb 04
Ben Stable Spot – Weaver Gas from Fuzz Studios on Vimeo.
Hey friends, check out the latest animation work from Fuzz Studios. I was fortunate to work with them again on the background matte painting. For this particular piece you can barely see my work, it is actually the sky out the windows. I’m posting this to show you how illustration can play both a large roll and a very small roll in animation. Each member of the team puts there talent together to make the animation work as a whole. Great work from Fuzz Studios as usual.
Stronger Theme – Deeper Life Bible Camp: Part 1
Feb 02
“And where does the power come from, to see the race to its end? From within.” – Eric Liddell
Stronger
Production has begun on this year’s theme for Deeper Life Bible Camp. I have been developing the visual side of camp for a few years now, and I have had the privileged of interrupting, and sometimes coming up with the themes.
This years theme is Stronger, which as first I was rather blown away by the possibilities. Lon and I brainstormed some ideas and here are just a few references that he mostly came up with.
- Hebrews 13:9
- Phil 4:13 – I can do all things through him who gives me strength
- Isaiah 41:10
- Pslam 46:1-3 – God is our Refuge
- 2 Kings 6 – Elijah surrounded by army…servant open eyes.
- 1 Cor 16:13 - Man Up
The main idea here is that the Lord is our strength. We may seem and even feel weak at times, but he is our strength from within. The guy is obviously not your body builder, but he feels like his is. This is just the initial stage of creation, as I put my idea first to paper, then onto the computer.
Next post will be of color and more progress.
Rapunzel
Jan 10
“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair, so that I may climb the golden stair.”
So, I must be on some sort of fairy tale kick here lately. At night I have been listening to an audio version of the Brothers Grimm fairy tales. After recently seeing “Tangled” I was inspired to create my own piece. My lovely wife spoke about planes the other night, and I wanted to incorporate planes into this piece. As you can see we have foreground, middle ground, and background; something that has been rather lacking in my work of late. I really enjoyed this piece, and I have made a print available on my etsy store.
Fairy For My Love
Nov 18
Back in August I drew this for Christina’ birthday. I was scared to paint it because my watercolor was still shaky. Well today, was the day I wanted to paint it and give it to her. She loved it show much she wants to hang it in the living room! So here is to my wonderful bride, whom I love dearly.
My wife reminds me of a fairy. No seriously! She is delicate, graceful, and stunningly beautiful. She glides around the house like a sweet little fairy, and I am completely captivated. With this painting I can always remember the day that I married a fairy.
Peter And The Wolf
Nov 16
Peter And The Wolf brings me back to my childhood. I remember going to see the play when I was very little, and being overwhelmed with fear of the wolf. The music is what captivated me of course. How a simple tune can be in its very essence, story telling. I have always been drawn to simple and concise story telling. Now being a visual story teller, this of course simply amazed me. Today I bring you my adaptation of this beloved story just prior to the capture of the wolf.
Lake Agassiz Wild Rice Project
Oct 09
Lake Agassiz Wild Rice have been quite the adventure. I have the privilege of branding this wild rice company, and thus far we have a logo, packaging, and a website.
I want to first showcase some of the final work.
Here is a screenshot of the Lake Agassiz website.
Package Design
Logo
The first order of branding was to establish a logo. This would setup the look and feel for the company from here on out. Organic and natural was the order of the day here..
Here is the finalized logo.
Here are two examples of what the sketches look like for logos. I try to key in on an idea, yet make sure that I have different examples across the board.
As you can see here, we are really trying to get to the core of what Lake Agassiz is all about. And that my friends, is simply wild rice. This is a home grown business and we want to convey the simplicity of that, yet not sacrifice professionalism.
I learned quite a bit on this project, especially about color and keeping a log simple.
All My Life
Oct 06
“All My Life” is the next music project by Chasing Clarence. I got to illustrate the cover, which was fun because I love drawing foxes. The idea is playing off the fable, “The Fox And The Grapes” which is the tension of seeing something you can’t have, and despising it for that very reason. This piece was to capture the very beginning of the fox seeing the grapes.
Initial sketch
Pencil drawing.

Art For Africa
Sep 27
*Update*
So obviously I was confused about which benefit I was giving to. This print is actually for the new homeless shelter, Village of Hope, here in Bemidji.
Hey friends, I have been invited to participate in an art auction to benefit “Art For Africa.” The charity organization supplies children in Africa with art supplies so they can experience artistic expression with adequate tools and resources. The show is going up in the Cabin Coffee house here in Bemidji. If you are around, please join us for the opening of the show this Friday for the First Friday Art Crawl.
